Rockville Centre Red-Light Camera Controversy

(516) 319-5822

A recent article published by the Rockville Centre Patch comments on the controversial issue of whether or not the red light cameras, found at 50 intersections across Nassau County, are positioned to protect drivers or generate revenue for the county.
Residents of RVC have been “socked” with costly traffic tickets due to the installation of the red light camera at the intersection of Lakeview Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard. Many believe the tickets are occurring “after the initial stop,” (RVC Patch).
Traffic Educator Chris Mistron ensures residents, “we are very diligent in how these violations are reviewed… if there is a doubt, then the violation is not issued.”
And as far as the revenue generating argument, Mistron claims “We are not looking for punitive enforcement. What we’re looking for is for people to obey the law… This is not set up as a gotcha law, it is set up to get people to obey the law. The program was not designed for revenue as the center of it,” (RVC Patch).
Mistron added that the goal behind the red light cameras in RVC and the rest of Nassau County is to change driving behavior to a more law abiding manner. Once people are aware of the violations being issued they will be more cautious to run the red light in fear of receiving a ticket even though there is no cop car present. This will eventually decrease infractions, resulting in a decrease of revenues and an increase in driver safety.
Regardless of where you are driving, you should always stop for a red light and obey traffic rules. If you find yourself with one of these red light tickets, contact Traffic Ticket Nassau County at 516-319-5822 or visit www.TrafficTicketNassauCounty.com for more information.
