The Long Beach Police Department received a new acting police commission on Friday, January 6th 2012.

Newsday reported “New City Manager Jack Schnirman tapped Lt. Michael Tangey, who has been with Long Beach police for 34 years, as acting commissioner while a search continues to fill the position permanently,” (Newsday.com). Schnirman hopes to permanently fill the position within 60 days.

Long Beach City Hall is located on ParkAccording to Newsday, Tagney said “it was a tremendous honor to step into the position left open by Thomas Sofield Sr., who retired in November after eight years as acting police commissioner.” He also said that he will focus on the city’s goal of curtailing spending and remains in the running for permanent police commissioner.

City manager Jack Schnirman said “it has become very clear that the residents of Long Beach are best served by having an acting commissioner of police rather than having the  city manager attempt to service both roles,” (Newsday.com).
