It look’s like red-light cameras are at it again! This time, it’s not just for those running a red light. Frank Saladino received a $100 red-light ticket for failing to come to a complete stop before making a right-on-red turn at an intersection where right-on-red turns are allowed.
Turns out, your car has to come to a complete stop, at 0mph (or for 3 seconds as Saladino found out from officials) before you can proceed to turn on red where permitted.
Christopher Mistron said “state law doesn’t contain any reference to 3 seconds – or any other length of time. Rather, a complete stop means cessation of movement and that’s what the people who review the red-light camera recordings are looking for,” (Newsday).
Mistron also said that licensed drivers should know that a complete stop is necessary, citing a section of the state’s Vehicle and Traffic Law that says drivers “may cautiously enter the intersection to make a right turn after stopping,” (Newsday).
Moral of the story, those red-light cameras will issue you a ticket if you don’t come to a complete, full stop, before turning, so make sure you stop if you don’t want a ticket.
