Red-Light Cameras: Reducing Crashes in Nassau County?

The Wall Street Journal released an article this morning regarding red light cameras and crashes in Nassau County. Red light cameras in Nassau County have reduced traffic accidents “an average of 12-to-16 percent at 40 intersections,” (The Wall Street Journal).

In 2009, Nassau County installed 50 red-light cameras at intersections, the maximum amount allowed by state law. Recently people have voiced their concern that red-light cameras have increased the number of traffic accidents due to drivers trying to avoid a ticket at the last minute.

At 32 intersections where the county compared 12 months of data before and after cameras were installed, “there was an average 12.3 percent reduction in crashes. One intersection at the Roosevelt Field Mall showed a steep increase,” (The Wall Street Journal).

The study also found another eight intersections with six months of before and after data, which showed an average of 15.5 percent decline in crashes. 

Newsday was told by Chris Mistron, who helped develop the red-light camera program that lower speeds mean less violent crashes.

Eating, Applying Makeup and Drinking Coffee Next to be Banned While Driving!

In Nassau County, and many other parts of the country, it is illegal to text while driving. Furthermore, it is illegal to use any mobile device while driving, unless it has a hands-free option. 

Experts believe there are a lot of other behaviors that are just as, if not, more distracting then texting-while-driving. Some believe that eating, applying makeup and drinking coffee should be banned to keep drivers focused on the road.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study showed “80% of all accidents are caused by distracted driving, some of which are caused by eating while driving,” (MyFoxChicago.com). They say burgers are the worst food to eat while driving, but the worst thing to consume while driving is hot coffee.

In Chicago, one trustee said she would like the local ordinance to “Crackdown on distracted drivers,” and that eating while driving should be one of them (MyFoxChicago.com).

Texting While Driving: 3 points and $150 fine!

If you haven’t heard already, texting while driving is illegal. Not only is it illegal, but a recent law passed this July increased the penalty from a 2 point offense to a 3 point offense and up to $150 fine.

In August, 1,082 tickets were issued to drivers using hand-held devices while driving. In the first six months of 2011, before the new law was passed, texting while driving averaged 427 tickets monthly.

According to an article posted by Reuters.com, police can now “solely stop drivers for using handheld devices while driving, making it a primary traffic offense.”

Be safe while driving. In 2009, “16% of fatal accidents on US roads were caused by distracted driving, and 20% of those injured in car accidents were involved in a crash where distracted driving was at least partly to blame,” (Reuters.com).

Effective October 5th- No More Waiting on Long Lines at NYSDMV for Renewals

New York State Department of Motor Vehicle has dropped its vision test requirement in an effort to streamline state agencies. 

Effective Wednesday, October 5th, drivers will be able to “self-certify” that they meet the vision requirements when they renew their licenses. This allows New Yorkers to renew online without having to make a trip to the DMV.

Barbara Fiala, DMV Commissioner said that “the change is one of several stemming from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s call for state agencies to streamline,” (Saratogian).

For some, this may sound like a great idea: no more waiting on long lines at the DMV; no more inconveniences when it’s time to renew your license, etc. But, for many this seems like a safety no-no!

Kathleen A. Marchione, Saratoga County Clerk called the “self-certify” provision “absolutely absurd,” stating “NYS DMV needs to rethink this initiative. It’s unfathomable to believe that (New York State) has reached such lows that they’d trade money for people’s safety,” (Saratogian).

Marchione futher expressed her concern “that vision-impaired people would falsely report good vision in order to easily renew their licenses,” (Saratogian).

Six other states don’t require eye tests for license renewals, seven including New York, now. What do you think of this revision?
