Nassau County started their Boot & Tow program
yesterday, booting and towing away vehicles to collect unpaid parking fines “from
scofflaws with three or more outstanding parking and red light camera tickets,”
reported CBS News.
Ed Mangano, Nassau County Executive, unveiled the new
scofflaw patrol vans, equipped with license plate readers last week. The boot
will cost $166 to remove and towing will cost $125, totaling $291, before you
even begin to pay the outstanding fines!
The movement is part of an effort by the cash-strapped
county to recover much-needed revenue. The county estimates it is owed some $49
million in unpaid traffic tickets (CBSNews.com).
