Every year, the Long Island chapter of Mothers Against Drunken Driving (MADD) holds a luncheon to honor Long Island law enforcement,
which includes officers, attorney and local citizens who display a high-spirited
amount of commitment against drunk driving.
The special guest speaker was Michael Tangley, commissioner
of the Long Beach Police Department. He spoke of his determination with law
enforcement and his commitment to eliminate drunk driving. He is the great-uncle
of Katie Flynn, then 7, who died in a head-on car crash on the Meadowbrook
Parkway in 2005. The driver’s alcohol level was .28, more than three times the
legal limit.
The driver of the vehicle in the crash, Martin Heidgen, was
sentenced in February 2007 to 18 years to life in jail. He and his lawyer filed
to have the ruling appealed in January 2011, but that appeal was overruled.
More than 72 law enforcement professionals were honored at
the event and was hosted gratis by Chateau Le Mer in Lindenhurst. Many local
businesses in support of MADD’s mission were also in attendance, which included
State Farm, TD Bank, Suffolk County Benevolent Association and BBA Photography.
