After a short rain delay, the New
York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles were all set for game one of the American
League Division Series. The Yankees beat
out the Orioles for the American East title, however the Orioles did remain in
the race till the very last game of the season.
The Orioles beat the Texas Rangers in the new Wild Card playoff round
and the stage was set for these two American League East rivals to go at it in
the first round.
C.C Sabathia was on the hill for
the Yankees facing Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel. Sabathia struggled against the Orioles this
season. In his 3 starts against them, he
had a 0-2 record. However, in this game
he did not struggle. Sabathia pitched
8.2 innings, struck out 7, and only allowed 2 runs.
The Yankees didn't waste

Suzuki, the second batter of the game, drove in Derek Jeter to put the Yankees
on top early with a 1-0 lead. 2 innings
later the Orioles took the lead on a double by Nate McLouth. Those would be the only runs Sabathia would
allow. An inning later the Yankees would
tie it up on a Mark Teixera double. The
next few innings was a well pitched game by both times until the top of the 9th. Jim Johnson, the Orioles closer who had 51
saves this year came into the game.
Russell Martin, the first batter he faced hit a home run to break the
tie. The Yankees would add another 4
runs to take and eventually win the game 7-2.
The Yankees and Orioles are set to
play the very next night again in Baltimore.
The Orioles are looking to win this crucial game two in Baltimore before
they have to go to Yankee Stadium for the rest of the series.
