Yankees Defeat the Orioles with a Walk-Off Home Run!

What a night for Raul Ibanez in the Bronx last night! Raul Ibanez hit not one, but TWO home runs in last night’s game. One of those home runs was a walk-off home run in the 12^th inning to beat the Orioles!

Ibanez was brought into the lineup for the Bombers to replace Alex Rodriguez in the number 3 spot. 

Yankees manager, Joe Girardi, made the decision to have Ibanez bat for Rodriguez who is just 1 for 12 with no RBI’s and seven strikeouts in the series. This was the first time A-Rod had ever been given a pinch-hitter in a postseason game.

However, Girardi reported he had to go with his gut feeling and make the decision. The decision by the Yankee manager seems to have been the right one! Ibanez is the first player to hit two home runs in a postseason game in which he didn't start!

After a short rain delay, the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles were all set for game one of the American League Division Series.  The Yankees beat out the Orioles for the American East title, however the Orioles did remain in the race till the very last game of the season.  The Orioles beat the Texas Rangers in the new Wild Card playoff round and the stage was set for these two American League East rivals to go at it in the first round.

C.C Sabathia was on the hill for the Yankees facing Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel.  Sabathia struggled against the Orioles this season.  In his 3 starts against them, he had a 0-2 record.  However, in this game he did not struggle.  Sabathia pitched 8.2 innings, struck out 7, and only allowed 2 runs.

The Yankees didn't waste anytime before scoring runs!Ichiro Suzuki, the second batter of the game, drove in Derek Jeter to put the Yankees on top early with a 1-0 lead.  2 innings later the Orioles took the lead on a double by Nate McLouth.  Those would be the only runs Sabathia would allow.  An inning later the Yankees would tie it up on a Mark Teixera double.  The next few innings was a well pitched game by both times until the top of the 9^th.  Jim Johnson, the Orioles closer who had 51 saves this year came into the game.  Russell Martin, the first batter he faced hit a home run to break the tie.  The Yankees would add another 4 runs to take and eventually win the game 7-2.

The Yankees and Orioles are set to play the very next night again in Baltimore.  The Orioles are looking to win this crucial game two in Baltimore before they have to go to Yankee Stadium for the rest of the series.

New York Yankees Face a Big Series!

Brian Cashman , the General Manager of the New York Yankees is not quite concerned with the current slump that the Yankees seem to be in.  He understands that there are highs and lows in the grueling 162 game season.  

On July 18^th the Yanks lead the Orioles by 10 games and the Rays by 10.5.  Baltimore currently trails by 3 games and Tampa by four, which is concerning considering the next three games will be against Baltimore and three after that in Tampa followed by another four games in Baltimore.  

Cashman stated that he hasn’t focused much on the Orioles; he is more concerned with his own team and how they have been playing.  He believes that if they bring their A game, they can beat any team in the league.The Yankees have lost 6 of their last 9 games and were fortunate to split their last six games with the Indians.  

Cashman said that the biggest problems they are having is that they are not pitching well, hitting with players in scoring position and some of the key guys are slumping.  Injuries are also a large part of the game, with two key players like Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner still out, it's hurting the team.  He maintains that this is the reason for the 162 game season, it’s to balance out the hot and cold.  Brian Cashman is moving forward with optimism and is confident in his team throughout the rest of the season!

The New York Yankees Are On Fire With a 10 Game Winning Streak!

The New York Yankees are on a 10 game winning streak! Sabathia lead the team to their 10^th straight victory after their 6-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. This is the Yankees longest winning streak since 2005!

Sabathia struck out 10 batters and issued one walk last night at Yankee Stadium. He joined teammate Ivan Nova as the only American League pitchers with nine wins this season!

The Yankees scored three runs in the fifth inning when Russell Martin hit a ground-rule double to drive in the first run and followed by Derek Jeter with a two run single. Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano also both hit solo homeruns!
