The New York Rangers started their conquest to the Stanley Cup Finals by dismantling the New Jersey Devils 3-0 last night at Madison Square Garden.

After two scoreless periods, the Rangers finally broke free for a goal to start the third period as Dan Girardi put one past Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur. They added two more towards the end of the period (one by Chris Kreider, the other by Artem Anisimov) and goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 21 shots to preserve a 1-0 series lead.

The shutout was Lundqvist’s fifth career playoff shutout. He didn’t show any wear and tear from the previous two series wins by the Rangers as both series went to seven games. He was great in turning aside pucks that were going past all of his teammates that have blocked so many shots in these playoffs.

Game 2 will be held tomorrow night at MSG as the Rangers look to extend their series lead and the Devils look to even it up. Game 3 will be played at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ Saturday night.

Operation ‘Hang-Up’ A Success For State Troopers

From April 23 through May 4, New York State Troopers issued 221 violations on Long Island for distracted driving during their latest campaign which they call “Operation Hang-Up.”

Throughout New York State, police issued 3,172 tickets during this operation, which was the second one in the past five months. Of the tickets issued on Long Island, 112 were in Nassau and 109 in Suffolk. 

Governor Mario M. Cuomo said that there will be more of these operations down the road, so drivers should wake-up, change their behaviors and stop putting themselves and others at risk (http://goo.gl/0feBG).

The governor signed a law last July strengthening the enforcement of distracted driving. The penalty, when caught, increased from two to three points. Under the law, looking at your phone or any other handheld electronic devise while driving is considered illegal. 

Recent research shows drivers talking on phones are four times more likely to be involved in a crash, and the behavior of such drivers is equivalent to the behavior of drunk drivers at the threshold of the legal limit of a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level. Texting increases the risk more than 23 times.

Mini-Madoffs Caught In Arizona

A couple who has been on the run for the past 12 years has been arrested by deputy marshals in Tonopah, AZ, 50 miles west of Phoenix. Officials believe they hid in Arizona for the past couple of years.

Nelson Grant Hallahan, 65, and his wife Janet Hallahan, 54, lived in several states in the Southwest and used a number of aliases as they were living their lives on the run. The couple pleaded guilty in Illinois federal court to bank and mail fraud conspiracy charges and money laundering. They didn’t show up for their sentencing and began living life on the run (http://goo.gl/RfhDN).

“The 12-year run from justice of the Hallahans, also known as the Mini-Madoffs, has come to an end, US Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales said in a statement. “Their investment scams involving family, friends and the elderly ruined many lives.”

While the couple was living in Illinois, they promised the victims significant returns on their investments. While the victims didn’t know they were running a Ponzi scheme, the Hallahans defrauded investors by selling interests in a tanning salon that they later sold without saying a word.

The Marshal Service said the couple netted millions of dollars from victims and maintained a lavish lifestyle buying yachts, luxury vehicles, designer clothes and jewelry (http://goo.gl/RfhDN).

UCSD Scientist Gets Out Of Ticket Using Physics

Dmitri Krioukov, a senior research scientist at UC San Diego, successfully appealed a failure-to-stop ticket that was issued to him by using a physics and math argument that swayed a San Diego judge.

He wrote a paper titled “The Proof of Innocence” where he showed a series of equations and graphs that disputed the claim that the police officer saw him speed through a stop sign and gave him a ticket.

Krioukov compared the problem to the way a person standing on the platform sees a train approaching and thinks it is moving slowly, when it is barreling down the track. He determined that a car moving at a constant speed can appear to move in the same way as a car that is moving fast but stops for a short time and then accelerates (http://goo.gl/DW10I).

He also said that the calculations he came up with are very simple and can be learned by studying this in high school. 

Krioukov said the calculations took five to ten minutes to complete, but when it came to writing the paper, it took a few hours. Doing this saved him a lot of money as he didn’t have to pay for a lawyer and was much less expensive.
