As of Saturday October 13^th, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano in affiliation with LI-Dog and sponsorship of Pet Supplies Plus of Long Island, have announced the opening of the new dog park in Eisenhower Park.  This new dog park is located at the junction of Salisbury Park Drive and Stewart Avenue.  The park is divided into two areas covering about 1.5 acres.  The two areas provide separate locations for large dogs, and small dogs less than 25 pounds.  These areas provide safe and fun open space for your dog to get some exercise.  They include shade structures, water stations, waste stations, trees and benches for any dog to enjoy. 

Mangano stated that Nassau County would continue to accommodate its residents and their pets with perks such as this on a regular basis.  “Nassau County is pleased to be able to provide residents with an additional place to exercise and socialize their dogs,” he said. “Dog parks encourage responsible pet ownership and lead to better behaved dogs, which ultimately reduce shelter overcrowding, since the majority of dogs surrendered to shelters are given up due to behavioral problems.”  

The grand opening festivities commenced at 11:00 am, which featured a ribbon cutting ceremony and an event featuring dogs available for rescue from local groups including North Shore Animal League, Bobbi and the Strays, and Yorkie911 rescue.  It is now available for all Nassau residents to bring their dog and enjoy the benefits of Eisenhower Dog Park a safe friendly area to bring your dog to train, exercise, interact or just simply relax.  

Drinking and Driving and Drug Use Laws Changing in NY!

The rules have changed against drunk driving and drug use in New York, as Governor Cuomo has put forth.  You can permanently lose your license if you rack up three or more DWI or drug related problems. This is existence if you have these convictions over a 25 year period or if you have five booze or drug related issues in your lifetime.

There have been too much drunk driving issues going on that it has been enough and it is time to put a stop to it.  Governor Cuomo spoke about how “driving is not a right but a privilege.”  By keeping these kinds of drivers off the roads it is keeping everyone else safe.   A serious driving offense, can be a numerous of things; accumulating 20 or more points, two or more driving convictions each worth five points or higher or a fatal crash.

This is not an issue anyone should be upset about or have issues with because it has to come to a stop. Every day there are drunk driving accidents where people are killed and it has to be put to a stop.  If people do not learn the lesson of drunk driving, they will have serious actions against them.

Long Island Women Sentenced to Prison for Driving Under The Influence and Killing 69 Year Old Woman

Kayla Gerdes, a Long Island woman, was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison earlier this week for driving over and jumping a curb and killing 69 year old Dr. Rebecca Twine-Wright in 2010.

Gerdes admitted she was high on drugs when the incident occurred.

 Gerdes, age 18 at the time of the accident, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, driving while high on drugs, reckless driving, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful possession of marijuana, conspiracy and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

At the time of the arrest, Gerdes had a stolen prescription pad and over 50 painkillers in her possession!

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano is Pushing to Keep The NY Islanders in Nassau!

Nassau County is putting their best effort forward to try and keep The New York Islanders in Nassau County. Leading the effort is Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, as reported by Newsday! The discussion has been put to standstill for quite some time since Mangano proposed a plan in January to renovate or build a new arena in place of Nassau Coliseum.

Manganos efforts are beginning by keepings the plan way more open than in the past. Now, Mangano is calling for any developer to kick start construction on the site. He has also become the chief of development on the project as well.

As of now, the highest bidder will be the single developer of the construction site and will have control of the project as long as it meets The Town of Hempstead’s zoning regulations for the land. 

One of the most important aspects at this point is the winning bidder for the project must begin negotiations soon after the Islanders are guaranteed to stay in Nassau County!

DWI Rates High on Fourth of July!

Last Fourth of July there were 100 DWI arrests in Long Island. Sadly, only 2 percent of drunk drivers are caught, meaning there could have been as many as 5,000 people driving under the influence on Long Island last Fourth of July.


With that said, Rep. Steve Israel, MADD, and DADSS called on Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to spend 10.5 million from the Surface Transportation bill to be used in anti-DWI technology research.

While we wait for this technology to be put into affect, reporting drunk driving and taking away someone’s keys are important prevention strategies.

Nassau County Police Department Turns 87!

The Nassau County Police Department hosted its annual open house from May 16-18 at their headquarters on Franklin Avenue in Mineola. The open house helped celebrate the 87^th anniversary of the police department.

The exposition was designed to educate, inform and involve citizens of Nassau County to create a spirit of cooperation among police officers on the citizens they serve (http://goo.gl/u6q3i).

The attractions that were there included the arson/bomb squad, and the emergency services unit. The Bureau of Special Operations demonstrated how they rappel from a building and there were also demonstrations by the department’s canine and mounted units.

The exhibits included the Highway Patrol Bureau, Aviation Unit, Crime Scene Search Section, among others. Kids were encouraged to take part in the KID-PIX photo ID program and at the children’s safety town.

At Least 60 Arrested for Memorial Day Weekend Drinking and Driving

In the weekend that kicks off the summer, there were people who took risks of getting home while having too much to drink and got caught.

According to Newsday, Nassau and Suffolk County Police Officers have arrested at least 60 people during the Memorial Day Weekend on charges of drunken or drugged driving (http://goo.gl/CkPCk).

In the breakdown of the numbers, Nassau County officers arrested 39 people on DWI charges and Suffolk County saw 21 arrests. All of these, to date, were from Friday night through Saturday morning. The numbers for the remaining days of the weekend are still to come out.

Devils One Win Away From Eliminating Rangers

After the New Jersey Devils dominated the New York Rangers in Game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals, the Rangers wanted to come out with a sense of urgency Wednesday night and take the series lead. However, it was the Devils who did just that.

New Jersey scored three quick first-period goals to take a 3-0 lead, only to have the Rangers tie the game early in the third period. But the Devils prevailed scoring late in the game and adding an empty-net goal to put the Rangers on the brink of elimination, once again.

The Rangers have faced two other win or out situations this year and have prevailed in both of those games. They travel to Newark tonight for Game 6, and if they can pull out a win, they will be back at the world’s most famous arena on Sunday for the decisive Game 7.

The National Click It or Ticket seat-belt enforcement campaign began on Monday as both Nassau and Suffolk County Police Departments will be participating, authorities said.

Nassau County police said in a Friday news release that its department and 16 other city and village departments will be a part of the enforcement program (http://goo.gl/5QSQO).

When driving your car, make sure that you and your passengers buckle up. If you do not and you get pulled over, you will receive a ticket from the police officer. Also, since Memorial Day weekend is coming, please drive safe and don’t drink and drive.
