From April 23 through May 4, New York State Troopers issued
221 violations on Long Island for distracted driving during their latest
campaign which they call “Operation Hang-Up.”
Throughout New York State, police issued 3,172 tickets
during this operation, which was the second one in the past five months. Of the
tickets issued on Long Island, 112 were in Nassau and 109 in Suffolk.
Governor Mario M. Cuomo said that there will be more of
these operations down the road, so drivers should wake-up, change their
behaviors and stop putting themselves and others at risk (http://goo.gl/0feBG).
The governor signed a law last July strengthening the
enforcement of distracted driving. The penalty, when caught, increased from two
to three points. Under the law, looking at your phone or any other handheld
electronic devise while driving is considered illegal.
Recent research shows drivers talking on phones are four
times more likely to be involved in a crash, and the behavior of such drivers
is equivalent to the behavior of drunk drivers at the threshold of the legal
limit of a 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level. Texting increases the risk more
than 23 times.
