The vicious attacks of September 11, 2001 are one of the most tragic days to occur in world history. The sadness and devastation that many people felt that day, it still felt today, 11 years later.

On that beautiful Tuesday morning, so many innocent lives were lost, and our nation was forever changed. Today, many people have gathered at the site where the Twin Towers once stood, to honor all of those whose lives were lost.

Although this day brings a tremendous amount of sorrow to many, it’s turned into a day to show pride and appreciation of being Americans.

9/11/01 is a day that will forever be documented and never forgotten by the citizens of the United States and those around the world. 

Many DWI Arrests Made Over Labor Day Weekend

Nassau and Suffolk County police officials are reporting that there were many driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrests made this past Labor Day weekend.

In Suffolk County, from 4 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday morning, there were 56 DWI arrests made and one boating while intoxicated arrest made. This was the first year that police set up sobriety checkpoints on the water in an effort to stop drunken boating accidents.

In Nassau County, from Friday at 7 p.m. to Monday at 7 a.m. police made 47 DWI arrests. Nassau placed additional officers on patrol over the weekend as an enforcement initiative to help stop DWI.

New York Yankees Face a Big Series!

Brian Cashman , the General Manager of the New York Yankees is not quite concerned with the current slump that the Yankees seem to be in.  He understands that there are highs and lows in the grueling 162 game season.  

On July 18^th the Yanks lead the Orioles by 10 games and the Rays by 10.5.  Baltimore currently trails by 3 games and Tampa by four, which is concerning considering the next three games will be against Baltimore and three after that in Tampa followed by another four games in Baltimore.  

Cashman stated that he hasn’t focused much on the Orioles; he is more concerned with his own team and how they have been playing.  He believes that if they bring their A game, they can beat any team in the league.The Yankees have lost 6 of their last 9 games and were fortunate to split their last six games with the Indians.  

Cashman said that the biggest problems they are having is that they are not pitching well, hitting with players in scoring position and some of the key guys are slumping.  Injuries are also a large part of the game, with two key players like Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner still out, it's hurting the team.  He maintains that this is the reason for the 162 game season, it’s to balance out the hot and cold.  Brian Cashman is moving forward with optimism and is confident in his team throughout the rest of the season!

Another Bump in the Road for Nassau Coliseum Plans

“Garden City developer Wilbur Breslin said Thursday that he is not moving forward with his submission to develop the land surrounding Nassau Coliseum. Breslin was one of four developers to express interest in the site, through Nassau County’s request for qualifications process that began last month.” – Newsday, Aug. 23, 2012

Just as the residents of Nassau County saw a glimmer of light in the debacle that is the development of the Coliseum, one of the key players in this plan backed out displaying no more interest in pursuing the plan.  The combination of the current asbestos removal and the perennial Islander playoff drought is a constant threat in the relocation of the onetime dynasty in the NHL.

 Last month it seemed that there was legitimate hope of rebuilding the Coliseum and its surrounding lands.  At the time, Long Island developers Wilbur Breslin, Donald Monti, Edward Blumenfeld and Baldassano Architecture each expressed interest in Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano’s Request for Qualifications process concerning the Coliseum and adjoining 77 acres, collectively known as “The Hub.” Without warning Wilbur Breslin, one of the key members in this development, suddenly has cold feet.

Marshall writes,“Breslin won’t pursue Coliseum development.” The well-known builder is quoted as saying, "I had a plan in my head that I had to get onto paper. . . All of that needs time and you can't do that overnight.”  It seems like only three remain, but that may not be the case.  a spokesperson for Baldassano Architecture had already said they were “looking at a portion of the site that does not include the Coliseum.”  It looks grim for the completion of this development, but it is not over yet two still remain.

West Nile Virus Case Confirmed in Nassau County

Earlier this week, the first human case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Nassau County this year. Nassau County health officials are warning all residents to take the proper precautions after this information has been released.

The resident who has the confirmed case of West Nile Virus, lives in the Town of Oyster Bay, is a 70 year old woman. She was hospitalized on July 27^th with symptoms of West Nile, she is now recovering.

College Students and Binge Drinking

There are many negative effects of binge drinking. Many of these effects are extremely well known. However, what is currently throwing health experts for a loop is that new research findings are reporting that college students are linking binge drinking with happiness.

This research was found at Northeastern, a liberal arts college. Researches asked students to fill out a survey on their drinking behaviors, and used pizza as an incentive. Fifty-eight percent of students responded to the survey, or 1,595 undergraduate students.

The research concluded that students were happier when binge drinking and were happier than their non-binge drinking peers. It also found that happiness was directly related to “status” with wealthy, white, male, heterosexual and/or Greek-affiliated students being happier than lower status students. Also, it found that lower status students or less wealthy, female, non-white, homosexual, and/or non-Greek affiliated students – those who binge drink report lower levels of social satisfaction that are compared to their high status counterparts. 

Many doctors are health experts are finding the link between binge drinking and social happiness among both high and low status students to be “treacherous”.
