Holiday shopping can be a hectic and overwhelming time of the year. Stay safe while holiday shopping this season by following these holiday shopping safety tips provided by the Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter and the NCPD.

Before you leave home, let someone know where you are going and what route you’ll be taking. Additionally, let them know approximately when you expect to return home. Leave your house secure, with doors and windows locked and alarms engaged. Leave the appearance that your home is occupied by leaving the lights on in the most frequently used rooms.

When parking at shopping centers, always park in well-lit areas and lock all your doors. Remove all items such as radar detectors, laptops or packages, chargers, iPods, etc. and hide them in the trunk, glove compartment, or out of sight. Avoid parking near vans or other vehicles with covered cargo areas.  Before you exit your car, look around for suspicious persons or vehicles lurking.

While shopping, keep your money and credit cards in your front pocket and try to limit the number of credit cards and cash you’re carrying with you at one time. To avoid being the victim of “identity theft,” be aware of exposing credit cards, debit cards and other identification at the cash register and near ATM’s. Thieves will use their cell phones to capture card information without you knowing or seeing it being done!

When returning to your car, avoid leaving the store with your arms full of packages; use a courtesy cart or make multiple trips. Check the parking lot for suspicious people and look around before you exit the store. Check underneath, in front and in back of your car as you approach it. Additionally, check the front and rear passenger seats inside your car before you enter it. If you are planning on returning to the store, never leave your packages in plain view inside your car. Lock them in the trunk or place them on the floor and cover them with a blanket or jacket.

Trust your instincts while holiday shopping. Although it’s the most wonderful time of the year, crimes still happen.
